Bolt Action Online

So, this is an odd one to add, but i am going to do it anyway.

I have played the tabletop wargame Bolt Action for about 10 years, and loved every minute. It got me back into painting miniatures, and the game plays great. It’s mix of WW2 vehicles and infantry, along with simple rules, and the use of order dice make it a great game.

The order dice are it’s star feature.
For every unit each player has you put an order dice into a shared bag.
You then draw the dice to see who goes next, which means it might be you once, twice, or five times in a row, but you never know who comes next (despite the probabilities being in your favour if you have more dice).
Once you draw a dice you assign it to any unit which hasn’t been used (or activated) already, and you do one of the 6 things the dice lets you do. Shoot, Advance (Move then Shoot), Run (move, no shoot), Ambush (wait in ambush), Go Down (dive on the floor for cover), or Rally (try to get yourselves back together).
You then place the order dice with that order face up next to the unit, thus tracking which uit has moved, and what they did (which, for instance, might give them cover if they went down, or let them react if they are in Ambush).

So the order dice determine who goes, what any unit can do, and track which unit did what. It’s simple, and brilliant, and it’s the thing that makes Bolt Action shine.

So, having played it alot I contacted the owners, Warlord, about 5 years ago to pitch a digital/online version of the game. I cited other games, such as Warhammer, and Blood Bowl, which have gone from tabletop to digital successfully. Sadly, they said no.

Well, this year, they said yes to another developer Slitherine. It was a blow for me, as I genuinely felt I had a great approach to it, and I thought we could deliver something which helped grow the community, and helped more people access the game.

My only concern was whehter it would be commercially successful. Based on player numbers I should have proposed Warhammer 40k or something instead!

But it was an area of passion, so I wanted to do it as a passion project.

Anyway, that boat has sailed, but if you get a chance to check out the tabletop game, or if Slitherine do a good job, then check it out. Just remember, Bolt Action Happens (meaning, regardless how great you and your army are, it’s sometimes all about the luck of the dice).
