I love talking. I love talking about games. I am not so keen on talking about me!
Anyway, here’s a bit of a random brain dump!
I have always been passionate about games.
Board Games. Role Playing Games. Video Games. Tabletop War Games. Even Sports.
I have been thinking about game designs since I was a child. If we couldn’t afford a board game that I wanted I would draw my own version on paper. I built my own tabletop wargaming table with it’s own rules when I was in my early teens, using cotton wool to show flaming tanks.
When I was in my 20’s I had no idea what I wanted to do until I saw an advert for a game tester at a games company (Vis Entertainment based in Dunfermline, Scotland). I applied for the job, nearly missed the phone call, and rode my motorbike 100 miles there & back every day to work as a tester.
After a 3 month contract came to an end I was lucky enough to be kept on, and then I spent a couple of years as a game tester, chipping in my comments, but being largely unheard.
I got my break thanks to Kirk Ewing and Brian Gomez who one day pulled me out of the office to an off site meeting, and asked me about a potential design. I gushed about some ideas for a bit and much to my surprise they told me I had the job as a game designer. One of the best days of my life.
From there I worked on a range of titles, before finally getting my break when their flagship game State of Emergency was in trouble and there was a major shake up in the team. I found my self initially as a designer, and then as joint lead designer on it.
After the success of State of Emergency I decided it was time to go it alone, and I created Outerlight…
